Nazare and more - Day 21 - Monday

Today we picked up a car in Coimbra and headed south. By the way Coimbra was quiet last night - either the kids were done early or they kept them away from us tourists.

Today is our 13th wedding anniversary - 20 years together. We celebrated by learning about some pretty famous Portugese couples.

First we stopped in Batalha and met Portugal's power couple King Joao (John) the first and his English wife Philippa (she was a daughter of Henry the 8th I think). Their marriage cemented the relationship between the two countries. They're buried together in the Batalha monestary.

Next we went to Alcobaca and saw the abbey and tombs of King Pedro the 1st and his wife Ines. They have a tragic Romeo and Juliet story - He married her sister but saw her on the side - then the sister died. His dad (King at the time) forbade their wedding. They got married anyway (had 4 kids) and so the King had her murdered. When Pedro became King it got pretty gruesome and crazy for the murderers - It must've been love.

Here's Ines tomb the guy with the monkey is one of her murderers - holding it up.

Then on to Nazare - A pure beach town.

Here it is from above...
Gorgeous!

One last anniversary coincidence - Our hotel for tonight is called the Hotel Magic - And it has been for 20 years!
